OceansAdvance is your connection point to the ocean technology innovation ecosystem of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and is the voice of the NL Ocean Technology Innovation Cluster. The NL Ocean Technology sector is comprised of companies, institutions, and organizations dedicated to ocean and marine-related technology, education, training, research and development, promotion, delivery, and application. The technology is used to deliver solutions and generate efficiencies through safe and sustainable exploration, development, monitoring and use of ocean resources. In Newfoundland and Labrador, world-renowned institutions, companies, industry associations, and cluster organizations are engaged in providing solutions for offshore energy development, fisheries and aquaculture, ocean observation and monitoring, transportation, climate change adaptation, marine recreation and tourism, and defence and security. THE ROLE:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director directs and oversees the effective strategic management of the overall direction, coordination, and management of all operational activities of the organization. Key functions include:
- Strategic Leadership – lead the development and implementation of the strategic plan including advising on sound board governance practices, policies, and reporting. Develop and present year-end reporting for the Board, Members and funding partners summarizing performance and financial outcomes.
- Operational Management – develop and execute a yearly operational plan that supports the overall strategic plan. Implement and update existing operational policies, to formalize and strengthen OceansAdvance, with a view to long-term viability and scalability.
- Financial Management – develop a comprehensive budget and ensure sound internal controls are in place for accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Program Administration – oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of programs including documentation, budgeting, and reporting.
- People Management – lead, coach, and mentor team members to ensure a positive and engaged work environment. Develop and implement applicable HR policies and procedures.
- Client Relations/Advocacy – build and maintain key relationships (locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally) by communicating and promoting the organization’s objectives and activities to its members, the general public, industry, public sector organizations, government, and the academic research community.
- Revenue Development – provide strategic guidance, advice, and direction to successfully achieve financial goals and objectives. Raise and manage funds, develop proposals, prepare budgets, negotiate terms, and report results.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- 10 years of progressive senior leadership experience, preferably in an ocean industry related organization.
- Experience seeking funding from various sectors e.g., government would be considered an asset.
- University degree in business, technology, or research related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of the ocean technology innovation ecosystem sector and it’s partners.
- Exceptional strategic leadership, management, and operational planning skills including strong financial acumen.
- Strong project management capabilities including collaborative partnership development skills.
- Well developed communication, interpersonal, media relations, public speaking, and presentation skills.
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills, especially proven team oversight.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm for the role, takes initiative with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills.
