The Role
As a member of a collaborative, client-focused and safety-oriented department, the Anesthesiologist is expected to function as a member of the surgical team and be responsible for the provision of anesthetic services to surgical patients in an acute care centre. Direct involvement in the care of the patient pre and post operatively is required with the Anesthesiologist assuming responsibility for preadmission anesthesia clinics as well as post operative pain management. The physician is expected to administer epidurals/spinals to labor and delivery patients and to provide on-call services.
The Work Environment
The Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital provides services to approximately 20,000 people. The hospital has 41 acute care beds (2 palliative care, 26 medical/surgical, 8 obstetrics, 1 pediatric, 4 ICU), 9 ER, and 44 long-term care. Services to patients include anesthesia, chemotherapy, family practice, general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ICU/cardiac, internal medicine, laboratory, palliative care, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, respiratory therapy, ultrasonography and 24-hour emergency. Other services include nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pastoral care, social work, diabetic education, and speech language pathology. Visiting clinics include neurology and ophthalmology. The long-term care patients are located in the Dr. Albert O’Mahony Manor; this is a long-term care facility attached to the hospital. Additional hospital facilities include Coish Place which houses psychiatry and various community support programs, including dialysis, and the Bungalow which is a 10-bed protective care facility.
Qualifications
- Medical Degree with specialist training in Anesthesiology
- Certification (or certification examination eligibility) in Anesthesiology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- Eligibility for a license to practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador
- Ability to meet Eastern Health’s credential and privilege requirements, including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
Compensation and Incentives
Compensation starting at $263,672 annually for full time permanent positions with a comprehensive benefits package including:

- Employer-sponsored Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)
Compensation starting at $1,335.00 per day for locum positions. Reimbursements for travel and relocation expenses available (conditions apply). Signing and retention bonuses available (conditions apply).
